Specialties

Forensic Psychiatry This subspecialty of psychiatry focuses on the interface between psychiatry and the law. Determination of competency to stand trial, competency to consent to a medical procedure, workmen's comp issues, psychic injury (posttraumatic stress disorder) claims, dangerousness evaluations, and assessment of medical malingering are a part of this work. Dr. Giakas has been called to give expert opinions at depositions and in court.

Geriatric Psychiatry This subspecialty of psychiatry focuses on the mental health of the older adult and requires a detailed understanding of medical, neurological, and psychiatric disorders. Disorders that are a focus of this specialty include late-life depression, Alzheimer's dementia, mental changes due to stroke, emotional changes associated with Parkinson's disase, and many other conditions. Comprehensive knowledge of medications and drug interactions is integral to this specialty.

Adolescent Psychiatry Dr. Giakas provides assessment and treatment for a variety of mental health issues in adolescent patients, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Mood and Anxiety Disorders.
